In 2003 Merlin Biosciences Fund III acquired a part-stake in Energist. Merlin Biosciences Fund III is managed by Merlin Biosciences a UK-based investment vehicle headed up by Sir Christopher Evans specialising in the medical sciences industry, providing growth capital to smaller emerging companies in this sector.
In December 2007, Merlin Biosciences Fund III acquired the remaining balance of shares in Energist at take 100% ownership, with Sir Christopher Evans as Chairman. In April 2008 Merlin Biosciences acquired rival Merchant Ventures to form Excalibur, which has over €400m funds under management in the Biosciences sector.
